I, Bennett Rivera, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States…
Morning came faster every day, I had forgotten sleep was a part of life. Instead, my life had been ripped from my hands and into the feeble-minded president of the United States. He dragged his team across the mud as he continued in power, without a thought in mind. I was slowly beginning to regret my decision as taking on this position. Now, in handcuffs- I tell my story- the story of how I tried to save America from failure.
It was only the first year of his presidency and his decisions were questionable at first- however, they began growing more unreasonable as the year came to an end. I was pushed beyond my power- becoming more of a leader than the man himself. I called a conference between all of the members of the cabinet in response to his errors. This, however, was a mask from the true intention. I, in relation to the hotel manager- delayed the president’s attendance. It was here, history changed its course. The conference led on without his presence and went as followed:
“Thank you all for coming. Shall we begin? Negotiations with the President of the United States took place in a frank and business like atmosphere. I believe we can call it a failure and a very fruitless round of negotiations. We carefully analyzed key issues of the global agenda and the president decided to make a few decisions, that are quite, well... I would say not well thought out as we hoped. This has happened multiple times in the last year and we are here to discuss this matter,” I started off as everyone looked down at the table not wanting to continue the discussion.
“And what are we going to do by discussing this matter? Where are we going to get with this? The president has been making decisions like this this whole past year and it has only brought our country down.”
“We can’t do anything about it. It’s the president, we’ve had multiple discussions about this before and it has brought us nowhere but only to bickering,” interjected Harold Ickes.
I realized this was my chance to step in and come to the big question of this meeting. “ I understand this, and that is why I have come to the proposal of a new idea that I have been pondering upon day and night. Here I have section 4 of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. It states that if for whatever reason the vice president and a majority of the sitting cabinet secretaries decide that the president is unable to discharge powers and duties of his office, they can put this down in writing and send it to the speaker of the House. The vice president would immediately become the acting president and take over all the president’s responsibilities. I’ve had enough of President George’s decisions, and I am convinced that all of you have too. We have seen how negative of an impact he has had. In order to fix this, we can just put down in writing all of the terrible things he has offered the U.S. and send it to the speaker of the house. It is a question of whether or not you will all agree to remove the president from office.”
“Now now, Mr. Vice president, we know that the president hasn’t been making the best decisions, but we cannot do that. You are asking to basically overthrow the president. Theoretically speaking, it is possible to knock him out of power at any time, but this is illogical. We have no evidence to show the president’s unthoughtful decisions. Plus, President George puts all his effort into making this country better,” said Henry Morgenthau as he stood up, shaking his head.
“Why Mr. Morgenthau, I believe that Mr. Vice president has presented a very interesting and beneficial idea. Our country is at a very bad place right now. Millions of Americans have lost their homes and jobs. President George has repeatedly quashed programs that would bring food and shelter to desperate Americans. In our last meeting he said he did this because he “didn’t want to endanger capitalism”. That is so foolish to do as he is watching our country die from starvation. We have the full right to try and regain power and fix things to only make them better,” replied George Marshall as I saw multiple faces around him beginning to think about the idea I had proposed. I was getting somewhere.
“ And how are we supposed to do this when this country loves President George? They will never come to believe that he is doing these terrible things. He is an inspiring figure to our country, the people are obsessed with him and the they are going to come against us if we try and do such a thing,” exclaimed William Ruckelshaus as my mind was racing. Things were much more complicated than they seemed to be.
“Why, if people think that he is so inspiring, we must refute this idea and expose the president’s actions,” I assured, still my mind racing, hoping that someone would take on from here. My eyes were caught on George Marshall as he confidently stood up and added something.
“There are many things that the president has done to make this country suffer. The people do not realize this. We must find all the evidence to convince them.” My heart was pounding. All we needed is 8 members of the cabinet to agree so I could become president. I wanted the power. I wanted to be in control. Now it was up to me to convince them.
“Ladies and gentlemen, let’s analyze the decisions that the president has made in the past year. President George has changed positions so frequently that no-one can rely on his word. What may be his greatest “success” - getting out of Congress’ way to get a tax cut passed - was a handout to the rich that will be paid by the poor and middle class for years to come. He has also cut off the programs that are supposed to help our country and the economy is in such a bad shape. Every single decision dealing with the economy has only made things worse. Imagine, soon enough capitalism itself will be needed just to save our country. He sits in his office all day and fiddles while the forces that are leading the Civil War are gathering momentum. Is this not enough to see how bad things really are? If we won’t do something about this, our country is simply going to fall apart. We have to take action and this is the only way. What do all of you say?,” I asked hoping to get the cabinets approval.
“I say this is a great idea. Yay, I am for it.”
“I am certain as well.”
“Me too.”
“I say we wait. This is simply too much, we cannot do this. My answer is nay.”
“I am not so sure about this either. I say nay.”
“I say yay.”
“I am completely for it. Yay”
“I do not believe this is a good plan. Nay”
“I’m sure this won’t work out either way. It’s a nay from me”
“Definitely nay.”
“Nay, I am not in this.”
“Theoretically speaking, this is very possible, but I am going to say nay. It sounds very suspicious Mr. Vice President”
“Nay.”
“Yea, that will be another nay Mr. Vice President.”
My heart started pounding. I could feel my chest moving with every beat of my heart. One more yay. Just one more. My eyes slowly caught up to Henry Morgenthau slowly standing up. He searched the room with his eyes, as if, trying to look for some kind of answer. As he put his hands on the table, he stated, “Mr. Vice President, you have quite the idea to remove the president from office. I will agree to the fact that President George has not been the best president and has made some very unwise decision, but we cannot simply overthrow him, as good as this idea sounds, I say nay.”
The meeting came to close…
The president was released from his temporary captivity- and I, was left with nothing but a split cabinet. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, however, this was impossible. I excused myself from the room, taking my pride with me. It was at that moment I decided the power of leading a country was too much for George. Instead, it is what I deserve. “And I’m going to take what I deserve. “
I spent the next few weeks planning on how I could take power from the President. The only option left for me, as vice president, was to remove the man in charge from the scenes. However- every move I made leading up to his execution was completely futile. I had hired a hitman, a date, time, and location. A change of plans contributed to the murder of Jim Monroe. He was a special agent officer, sworn to protect the life of George. It was he who I had to eliminate first. Not an easy task, however, very possible.
In order to do so, I had to come up with a plan, and I ended up with a way to commit the crime and the best possible answer was poison. He was always drinking coffee, and if he died from poisoning then there would be no trace to me. Even if I was questioned, I could easily say I didn’t see anything. This is perfect. All I have to do now is find the weapon of choice, and commit the crime.
First, I began research on the most notorious murder cases committed discreetly. A common form of death was poison. It was only through the wholly owned books on sedatives, poisons, and other medicinal herbs were these acts cleared of security interferences. I learned about different snake venoms, fruits, trees, seeds, metals, and more along with murder cases associated with them. My weapon of choice finally became- polonium.
This was my choice mainly due to the fact that it’s not an instant death. This poisoning can last from days to weeks before finally killing the victim. Side effects include - but are not limited to - headaches, hair loss, and diarrhea. It also does not take very much of this metalloid to kill someone, either. Even a gram of this stuff is believed to have the power to kill over one million people. Due to its rarity, it would be extremely difficult to find and obtain, however, I knew people in the IAEA that saw I got some as soon as possible.
I had it melted before delivery, I picked it up in the back alleys of DC, and quickly slipped some into his keurig for him to drink within the next hour. When he ran out of our meeting and stayed in the bathroom for an hour, I knew it did the trick. Within the next two weeks, i saw Jim decay into nothing, and he eventually died in his sleep overnight. This gave me full access to George if only for one day, and everything quickly slipped into place. I ordered for my hitman to murder George as soon as news broke out about Jim’s death.
I was slowly walking down the hallway to check up on President George as I see Henry Morgenthau walking down towards me. I turn to the nearest corner trying to avoid him as much as possible.
“Hello, Mr. Vice President,” he exclaims trying to catch up with my steps.
“Hello Henry, I’m in a hurry for an important matter, please do not hold me up,” I replied trying to avoid eye contact.
“I just wanted to mention that I was thinking about what you mentioned in the cabinet meeting, and I have decided to be in on it,” he gave a small smirk as I turned around.
“Meet me in my office 2:45 pm.”
We sat down in our office over coffee, as I made Henry swore to secrecy.
“So when is this happening?” he asked staring down at his watch.
“The hitman will choose the right time. It’s most likely better at night. I will warn you ahead of time.” I whispered and dismissed Henry to go on and do his daily duties while I finish mine. Soon, very soon, I will be the president.
Night had fallen in Washington D.C.. All I could do was stare outside the window, into the darkness, waiting for the power to be mine. The seconds passing felt like hours upon hours, until..
“MR. VICE PRESIDENT, GET UP! GET UP!” yelled the cleaning lady frantically running and pulling me out of bed.
“What is wrong Mrs. Defordi? What is up with all the chaos?” I exclaimed, trying to act surprised.
“THE PRESIDENT..... !!”
“What?!!?? What is happening??” I jumped and ran out into the hallway into the president’s room as Mrs. Defordi fell on the floor weeping.
“NO, NO, NO! LORD HAVE MERCY!” she cried out burying her face into her hands on the floor. The president’s room was quite a brutal sight The corpse of the president laid in cold blood.. I ran in trying to not smile because my time had almost come.
“What is happening??” I yelled as lights were being turned on everywhere in the white house. Gasping and running was heard as sirens were playing in the distance. The hitman had his gun pointed at President George.
“What are you doing??!” I screamed as I jumped for the gun. “How could you do this?” I exclaimed as I fired the gun at the hitman. All you could hear was the thud from the hitman hitting the floor.
The next few hours…
I had called for help and emergency services. I was unresponsive- dropping to the ground and laid there, in shock. I surprised myself with how far I’d come. The final operation of gaining power was up to me. I told the enforcements the fabricated story of how I protected George and would never allow for something like this to happen again. I had even killed the hitman to be more convincing. It was all falling into place. I left, becoming a suspect for the presidents murder. Of course, the questioning continued and the investigation pursued for three more months. In those three months- I savored all I could; reforming, rebuilding, and reinstating lawful good. Yet there was a loose end. One I had to tie up before the police could grab and pull out information. Yet, it was a loose end I couldn’t tie, until he found me. The only man present when explaining my plan and the only cabinet member who shifted their vote after the meeting. The Attorney General- Henry Morgenthau. He approached me only one week before I was caught in my hotel room. There was a knock on my door. I quickly hid my passport and ticket in back pocket. Slowly, I walked to the door and opened it to reveal the man of hour, “Hey Henry. I was just about to go look for you.”
“Hey, Bennet. I wanted to talk to you about the whole issue going on.”
“Oh what? Am I being questioned in my own room now?” I laughed it off, playing my fake innocence.
“It’s alright, I’m not here to question you. I’m here to tell you, you don’t have to worry about a thing.”
I looked at him in confusion. “What do you mean?’
“I may have tampered with the evidence, just a little.” he said with a smirk.
I was weary, however, it had been two months after the death of the president. If he was here to arrest me- then he would have done so months ago. Instead, I chose to trust him, and smiled graciously. After shaking my hand and exchanging a few words, he left and I was called up to the front desk. There they told me one of my suitcases was unable to located. I grew impatient, however, as a new-found leader I kept my composure and began sending my men to locate the bag. I returned to my room, sighing to release the build up of worry and stress. I didn’t realize my eyes were heavy- and before I could come to my senses, I was lost in a dream. A dream cut short from ever ending.
Night came slowly, and peacefully. I was asleep- interrupted by the sounds of quick feet and loud banging.
“OPEN UP!” they said, and right away, I knew the police had come. I quickly put on my robe. “OPEN UP NOW!” they yelled again and I scampered across the floor frantically trying to find my glasses. I ran to the window. It was too high of a jump. I had no way out. I ran to open the door as it came down in a crash with the police standing there right in front of me.
“Mr. Vice President, you are arrested for murder!”
“Now now, you have no evidence to convict me of any murder..” I replied smiling as Henry steps up from behind. “Henry! How nice it is to see you! Please explain to them what is going on, they have no evidence of me committing any murder?” I exclaimed nervously as Henry glared down at me.
“Mr. Vice president, I have a collection of all the evidence coming down to you as the murderer of the president. Is this true?” He asked and my stomach flipped upside down.
“Henry, you know I would never do such a thing to our president?”
“Alright, let’s take a look at these recordings and a few of the photos I have taken of you, Mr. vice president, planning all along the murder of the vice president. We have found track of the poison you used in your office. Also, thank you for not destroying the documentation of your murder plan, it was a great help. Now would you like to add anything?” He looked down at me and smiled, the smile of hatred.
“Well, what can I say? HE DESERVED IT! I WILL MAKE THIS COUNTRY A BETTER PLA-” I yelled at the top of my lungs as a crowd had gathered at my room while I was being dragged out of my hotel room, across the red floor, as red as the blood stains from the president.
“And that is how I got here. This cold and empty jail cell,” I exclaimed as all the faces stared at me in amazement.
“Well well, “Mr. Vice President”,” Billy said in his southern accent. “You are a might great story teller hahaa.”
“You don’t believe me??!” I replied surprisingly.
“Naw, I don’t believe you,” he said turning around and laughing loudly.
“Well then, see for yourself, “ I replied turning to the television screen outside the glass doors leading to our cells. There you could see my face, in a tie and suit, next to my face again, it striped jail clothes. “I told you Billy. I told you.” I assured him as he pulled away staring at me, and sooner than you know, I was sound asleep in this small, cold jail cell, where I would be spending the rest of my life as president after president would be reelected.
Morning came faster every day, I had forgotten sleep was a part of life. Instead, my life had been ripped from my hands and into the feeble-minded president of the United States.
